How To: Watch Satellite TV on a PC using DVB Dream

As the line between PC monitors and flat-panel televisions continues to blur, and the trend of spending longer periods sat a desk becomes more widespread, it seems less of an outlandish idea to want to watch satellite television on a desktop computer. DVB receiver cards are readily available and provide the hardware component that makes this a possibility.

Once you have the hardware, however, you'll need the right software to make watching television on your PC a reality. DVB Dream is one of the best DVB players available for Windows, offering support for DVB-S, DVB-S2, DVB-C and DVB-T tuner cards, and is very easy to set up and use. Our simple guide walks you through the setup process.

You will need a DVB TV Receiver installed and configured on your PC before you can follow the steps in this guide.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • 1

Access the related download link for this article and grab the installer file for DVB Dream. Once this has completed downloading, locate the executable file in your downloads folder and run it to start the installation process. Follow the on-screen prompts throughout installation.

  • 2

After installation, launch DVB Dream using the shortcut on the desktop. Click Options and Device to check that DVB Dream has detected your installed DVB tuner. If the device is not selected, select it using the up/down arrows and click Start to initialise it. When the DVB tuner is initialised, the model name is visible at the top of the DVB Dream interface window. If you are not able to initialise the DVB tuner, consult the troubleshooting section of the manufacturer documentation supplied with your tuner.

  • 3

Click Options and choose Diseqc to begin setting up the satellite configuration. Select the Diseqc type and port number that is relevant for your DVB tuner and click Add Satellite (this information should be present in the user guide supplied with the device). If you are not sure what to select here and there is no reference to it in the documentation, select None as the Diseqc type.

  • 4

After clicking Add Satellite, the Satellite selector dialog is shown. Use the dropdown selector to choose one of the available satellites, then set the LNB type for the satellite you specified. Again, you may need to consult your DVB tuner documentation to ensure you select the correct configuration as it varies from model to model, and setup to setup.

  • 5

Once the satellite(s) and LNB(s) have been configured, click Channels and choose Scan to begin scanning for available channels.

  • 6

When the scan is completed, a list of channels that were detected is shown. Click Save Channels to store the list so that you do not have to perform the scan again next time you use DVB Dream.

  • 7

Select a channel in the list to begin viewing it within DVB Dream.

Tips & Advice

  • DVB Dream allows you to render channels that you are viewing using different audio/video codecs, so that you can optimise viewing according to your system. Click Video on the Options menu and select the codec and rendering options that best suit your system, then choose OK. Click Apply to finalise the new rendering and codec options.
