Mozilla Firefox 6

New Features and Tips

Firefox 6
Firefox 6 is finally available  for download while version 7 is being under development as well. Firefox 6 sees the addition of lots of HTML5 and CSS3 features and more privacy controls, and Firefox 7 — at long last — will focus on memory management and performance increases.

The browser offers some new features compared to its predecessor, especially the authorization manager gives the user more control over more and more dodgy websites. Unlike its predecessor, the Mozilla Firefox browser now features some new stuff: for example, the Authorization Manager provides more control and restricts surfing websites.

'About: memory' opens the optimized memory management, but in terms of speed it appears to be no faster than its predecessor. Typing 'about:memory' in the address bar opens a page with buttons that can manually trigger garbage collection (GC) and cycle collection (CC). Garbage collection frees up memory by clearing old and unused JavaScript objects; cycle collection does the same for DOM objects, including web pages. By hitting these buttons repeatedly - or by hitting “Minimize memory usage”, which triggers both processes three times in a row - you can reduce Firefox 6′s memory footprint significantly, according to developers.

When browsing web pages require a lot of permissions: cookies, site clearances, passwords or pop-ups, with the new authorization manager ('about:permissions'), you can set these values graphically for each web page. To do this, type 'about:permissions' in the address bar and select the desired address in the left column. You can setup surfing rules for every website (passwords, location sharing, cookies, pop-ups) or you can ban the website. Unfortunately, there's no other way to add websites to list, you must have visited the desired destination at least once.

The add-on manager of Firefox 6 features a new link: 'Make sure your plugins are up to date'. Clicking on it would check all installed plug-ins (no add-ons) which are tested to date and offers appropriate update links where available.
In addition, some other changes integrated into Firefox 6:
The address bar now highlights the domain of the website you're visiting.
Streamlined the look of the site identity block.
Added support for the latest draft version of WebSockets with a prefixed API.
Added support for EventSource / server-sent events.
